En cuanto Scarlett abría la boca era rechazada. Ya entonces tenía esa voz ronca que ahora es tan característica de su persona. No parecía lo correcto para una niña actriz. De camino a casa en el metro, tras otro rechazo ella tuvo una pataleta. Su madre decidió que ya habían tenido bastante con querer meterse en los anuncios publicitarios. Pero no iba a rendirse. A los 8 años Melanie la apuntó en la famosa Lee Strasberg, escuela de teatro para gente joven. Y desde entonces ha trabajado sin parar. Melanie le da consejos pero empuja a su hija a seguir sus propios instintos.

As her daugther's business manager, it has been said that she once had ambitions to be an actress herself but she married young and quickly settled down to be a mother and wife.
Family lore has it that she was named after Melanie Hamilton, the character in 'Gone With The Wind'. Melanie's own daughter, of course, was named after the film's other heroine, Scarlett O'Hara. This was no coincidence.
Melanie started taking Scarlett in castings for television commercials. She seemed perfect for this. She was a clever, precocious and very pretty seven-year-old. But there was a problem. As soon as Scarlett opened her mouth, she was rejected. Even then, she had the husky, faintly smoky voice that is now so much a part of her screen persona. It just did not seem right for a child actor. On a subway train heading home one day, after yet another rejection, she threw a tantrum. Her mother decided they'd both had enough of trying to break into TV advertising films. But she was not about to give up.
At the age of eight, Melanie enrolled her at the celebrated Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute for Young People. And since then she worked non-stop.
Melanie offers advice, but urges her daughter to follow her own instincts.
"I didn't have a psycho stagemom pushing me into things."
